Refrigerator repair, built-in and integrated
A built-in refrigerator fails in a small number of well-worn ways, and the compartment showing the symptom is often not the compartment with the fault — which is the single most useful thing to know before anyone opens a grille.
What the call is usually about
Three faults account for most of these visits
Warm fresh food with a freezer still holding. On a unit with two evaporators that is almost never the compressor — it is the fresh-food evaporator icing over, its fan stalling, or the defrost circuit serving that one coil giving up. The freezer stays perfect precisely because the half that failed is not the half you noticed.
A compressor that runs and never cycles off. Look for the reason it cannot catch up: a condenser matted with dust behind the base grille, a door gasket that has let go at one corner, a coil under a blanket of frost. Left alone, continuous running is what eventually costs the compressor, which is why this one is worth attending to while it is still cheap.
Water where there should not be any. Under the crisper drawers it is usually the defrost drain, blocked at the trough or frozen in the tube, backing up until it finds the shelf. Down the inside of a door it is a seal that has stopped meeting the cabinet, and warm room air condensing on the cold liner.
On the visit
What gets measured, and in what order
Readings first, opinions later. The order matters because each step rules out the ones after it, and doing them backwards means pulling a unit forward to find a blocked grille.
- Actual compartment temperatures against their set points, both sides, taken from inside rather than off the display
- Condenser condition and the draw of the condenser fan, at the grille
- Each evaporator inspected for ice, and defrost checked for where the cycle terminates
- Evaporator fan speed and whether air is actually reaching the compartment that is warm
- Door gasket along its whole run, hinge corner included, and how the door sits when it is released
- Only then, sealed-system pressures — because everything above is cheaper and far more common
Getting to it
The cabinet is part of the job
These units were designed to be serviced from the front, and most of this work is done through the base grille and the interior with the appliance where it stands. That is deliberate: a panelled column in a fitted run has nowhere to go sideways.
When a unit genuinely has to come forward — a sealed-system repair, a compressor, an evaporator behind the liner — the doors and the panel come off first and it moves on rollers, not dragged across a finished floor.
